Then & Now

Growing Together Through 50 Years of Song

Finding Safety in the 1970s

When ANNA Crusis began in 1975, the world was much harder for lesbians. Being gay had just been removed from the list of mental illnesses two years earlier. People could lose their jobs or homes simply for who they loved. For many of our first members, ANNA wasn’t just a place to sing—it was a place to feel safe.

Some of our early singers took real risks to join this openly feminist choir. At rehearsals, they could finally be themselves and connect with others who understood their lives. These gatherings became important spaces where lesbian women could build friendships and gain confidence when few other doors were open to them.

From the beginning, ANNA has brought lesbian and straight women together in song. This was special in the 1970s, when such groups were rare. By singing side by side, we broke down walls and built understanding.

These connections mattered. Straight members became strong allies after hearing about their friends’ challenges. Lesbian members found acceptance they couldn’t always find elsewhere. Through music, we created bonds that crossed boundaries and changed perspectives.

Welcoming Everyone Today

Now in 2025, we continue to grow as a community. Today’s ANNA proudly welcomes transgender and gender fluid individuals, understanding that our fight for equality must include everyone facing gender-based discrimination.

We’ve added songs about trans experiences to our programs and highlight diverse artists in our performances. For us, this expansion comes from the same values that brought us together 50 years ago—creating space for people to be their authentic selves.

Learning Across Generations

One of the best things about being a 50-year-old choir is the conversation between generations. Our founding members share what life was like “back then,” while newer members bring fresh ideas about gender and inclusion.

These conversations help us honor our roots while making sure our community remains relevant and welcoming. Together, we’re finding the balance between respecting our history and embracing change.

As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we’re proud of our journey from a women’s choir providing crucial safe space to a feminist inclusive community singing for justice. Our theme for this year says it perfectly: “50 Years Forward – Not One Step Back.”
